Your deer hides will stay in the USA and support American Union workers! The hides are not shipped away to China, Pakistan, Vietnam and Bangladesh. The hides are manufactured into leather in Gloversville, New York.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO SALT THE HIDE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! SALT THE HIDE IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT IS REMOVED FROM THE CARCASS. Please follow the salting instructions below to ensure that your deerskin is properly preserved. When skinning a deer, be careful not to cut into the flesh of the skin. Pulling the hides produces the best skins.

Salting Instructions:

Lay the hide out flat with the hair side down. Find a place that’s not exposed to the elements, is protected from pets and other animals. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees, the process begins to slow (frozen hides will not cure).

Cover the hide using a fine grain non-iodized salt, the iodine in iodized salt can stain the hide. Also, don’t use rock salt, the hide doesn’t have enough moisture to break down the large crystals. It will take about one pound of salt per pound of hide. It’s impossible to over-salt a hide.

Let the hide lay out flat for 4-5 days. The salt will pull the moisture from the hide as it preserves it. As the hide absorbs the salt, cover any bare spots with more salt. Be careful when leaving the hide out in the open. Direct sunlight will dry the hide out too quickly. Rain can wash the salt away which means starting the process again.

A layer of salt can be seen on the entire hide after 4-5 days (no wet or bare spots), you can stack the hides hair side down. If you must fold the hides, fold the hair side in so that the flesh side is out, and they can continue to cure. DO NOT WRAP THE HIDE IN PLASTIC, it may cause the hide to get a fungus.
